P.447-450, #1-29 odd

World Premiere April 2007, at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts

Original Cast: Ellen Deutsch

This oldest piece in Geeksdanz’s repertoire explores the use of long division as a creative springboard, challenging one school principal’s declaration that “long division stifles creativity.” In this eight-minute solo, Ms. Deutsch solved a single long division problem in movement. Each digit was translated into a unique movement and the long division bar drawn out on the floor. The piece is rehearsed only minimally to preserve the effect of watching the dancer solve math problems in her head in real-time.
